Kodaly Approach Level 1 Applied to "the First Article of Faith," Lesson 1

Teacher Preparation
Write out the words for The First Article of Faith and compose a simple rhythm based on Kodaly Approach Level 1 Method Book only (ie. remember to use only TA, Ti Ti, and REST in your composition.)  I used the rythms used in The Children's Songbook version and altered the ones which were not for level 1 students. For my post about  composing click here.

Practice clapping and speaking your rhythm.  Practice keeping beat in one hand while tapping the rythm with your other hand.

Student Lesson A
Concepts:  Beat, Rhythm (can also teach solfege and Curwen's handsigns if the student is ready).

1) Show the Kodaly Level 1 version of Article of Faith 1.  Say the words aloud with your student.

2) "Can you speak and clap the Rhythm for this song?"  Help the student as needed

3) "Can you stomp (or jump . . .) the Rhythm for this song?"

4) "Can you clap (stomp or jump) the Beat?"

Note:  If the student is ready for the melody, sing it and  model the appropriate solfege handsigns.  After doing it once or twice for them, have them match your pitch and handsigns by echo singing (you do one measure or phrase, etc and then the student mimics you).
